Staff of the U.S. Solicitor General’s office met in Washington, D.C. on Monday with attorneys on both sides of the eight-year-old New Jersey sports betting case.
Renowned attorney Ted Olson represented the state, Michael Griffinger was on hand for the top Trenton legislators, and Ron Riccio represented the state thoroughbred horsemen, with others also present for the one-hour meeting.
Attorneys for the NFL, NCAA, MLB, NBA, and NHL met separately with the Solicitor General’s staff.
Dennis Drazin, who operates Monmouth Park for the horsemen, said there was “nothing surprising” about the questioning. He said that his side continued to hammer home the fact that the state was told in Christie I that there was a way for the state to open the door for sports betting. And in Christie II, the judge – Julio Fuentes – who wrote the majority opinion in Christie I – dissented with the other two judges who disagreed with his analysis of his own ruling.
