The 2003-07 NBA Betting Scandal: The Online Public Record

Please find below links to the relatively few online government court filings and statements involving the NBA betting scandal case(s).  Related online court rulings are also linked below.  I welcome links to other substantive government documents, pronouncements or filings I may have missed.

U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York (USAO EDNY; Brooklyn) Criminal Information against Tim Donaghy.

USAO EDNY Affidavit in Support of Application for Arrest Warrants for Jimmy Battista and Tommy Martino dated August 14, 2007.

USAO EDNY press release dated August 15, 2007, announcing “National Basketball Referee Pleads Guilty to Participating in an Illegal Sports Betting Scheme Involving NBA Games: Two Co-Conspirators Also Charged.”

Judge Carol Bagley Amon’s July 23, 2008 rulings on restitution (for Donaghy, Battista, and Martino).  The basics of the cases against each co-conspirator are offered intermittently throughout the ruling, but especially in Sections I (“Introduction”) and II (“Factual Background”).

U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruling, dated August 6, 2009, in United States of America, Appellee, v. James Battista, also known as Baba, also known as Sheep, Defendant-Appellant, Docket No. 08-3750-cr.  Though this ruling dealt with Battista’s appeal of restitution, some basic facts of the case are presented.  Note: Battista was the lone defendant who contested restitution.

[This is not an official record, but I have compiled and posted a comprehensive timeline for the criminal justice response to the scandal.]

[This has nothing to do, per se, with the government’s investigation or prosecution of Battista, Donaghy, or Martino, but for interested parties, here is the NBA’s official assessment of the scandal: The Report to the Board of Governors of the National Basketball Association (the so-called “Pedowitz Report”), submitted on October 1, 2008.]
